a flash flood had hit daly city. >> water rushing down a sandy hill covering the streets in a sea of brown mud. there was no rain today. this was all because of a water main break. it happened at around 4:30 this morning near looseain avenue, that is east of 280 near hillside park. cbs 5 reporter joe vasquez is in the neighborhood where people are still digging out of the mess tonight. joe? >> reporter: hi, dana. the mudslide came straight down this hill and as you can see, it virtually missed this entire neighborhood here. cars were the only casualties. >> it really sounded like a rushing river. >> reporter: when neighbors first heard it, they thought it might have been a rain storm and then they stepped outside and gawked. >> when you saw this rushing mudslide, what went through your mind? >> like oh, my gosh, god, please help us. >> reporter: it wasn't an act of god, it was an 8-inch pipeline that burst, blowing out a daly city hillside sending 45,000 gallons of water down a hill creating a massive mud fall that consumed a dozen cars along the avenue. the owners could only watch as the
lee, thank you. >>> crews in daly city shifted their focus from cleaning up the muddy mess to prehaven'ting a water main break from getting -- to preventing a water main break from getting worse. they are shoring up a hillside before the rain comes. cbs 5 reporter joe vazquez shows us just exactly what's being done. joe. >> reporter: hay, allen. no, seriously, hay is one way they are using to shore up the hillsides compromised by the mud side. -- mud slide. stacking hay and clearing storm drains, two tasks that have daly city crews hard at work today. the hay is being used to contain the substantial mud still covering nearby hillside park. they will clean that mud up later because right now, they are focused on what they call weatherization making sure the upcoming rainstorms aren't going to do more damage to the neighborhood. it turns out yesterday's mud slide swamped all the storm drains so now workers are having to find them and then dig them out so they can help divert any rain. >> so we're going to take our remote control tv camera to go into the pipe itself and then get to the st

when the ambulance arrived. live in oakland, ken wayne. >>> police in san francisco say a daly city woman has surrendered, and has admitted she is responsible for a hit and run accident involving a bicyclity. it happened monday in the presidio. the woman surrendered last night, after police reported that police were looking for a hit-and-run driver. the cyclist told us he suffered a major concussion. he also lost his bike, which he says was stuck to the front of the vehicle. the damaged bike was later found. police say the woman apologized, but is being charged with felony hit-and- run. her name still hasn't been released. >>> more problems tonight for toyota. the company is recalling hundreds of thousands of prius hybrids. many prius owners are just now hearing about this recall. >> reporter: frank, many toyota customers told us they bought a prius because of its gas mileage and dependability. tonight, school teacher marian mark drove her 2007 prius to the downtown toyota of oakland dealership to get her tires checked. she told us she wasn't aware of the latest recall. >> if there'

. crews in daly city are working feverishly to clear out that massive mudslide before it gets even worse. nbc bay area's christie smith shows us what is being done, and why neighbors are still concerned. >> reporter: no sleeping in today. the front loader started at day break at hillside park, moving the mudslide by emanuel romero's home. >> i think if there is anything about the integrity hill that we needed to be worried about, they would tell us. we're assuming things are safe for now. >> reporter: his car was towed back to his house when it was nearly buried yesterday when a pipe broke, sending 45,000 gallons of water, sand, and mud down the same avenue, and now heavy rain is coming. >> if we're going to be bringing in some hay bales and uncovering where the storm drains have been covered over. >> reporter: he says the engineers say the 12 homes that were evacuate ready safe, but they need geotek cal advice on permanent repairs to the hill. for now it's about diverting rainwater. >> once we get the weather taken care we can sequentially take the mud out of the park itself. right now
